The growing popularity of cell phones and other handheld devices have made distracted driving accidents a nationwide epidemic. Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to injury, because they are smaller and less visible than cars. It is important to note that motorcycles also come with fewer safety features than cars.
Even when a motorcyclist does everything right, a distracted driver can still cause a crash. In most cases, the motorcyclist will sustain much more injury and damage than the motorist.
The most dangerous situation for a motorcyclist is when a car makes a left-hand turn. Cars turning left into the path of a motorcyclist account for 42 percent of all accidents between a motorcycle and car.
Several Colorado accidents could have been avoided if the driver had been more attentive. Locally, police are seeking a hit-and-run driver who seriously injured three motorcyclists on Saturday June 28.
Based on reports from the state patrol, the motorist was traveling westbound on Colorado 24 and failed to see a motorcyclist in the next lane. The driver turned left onto Crystal Peak, directly into the motorcycle’s path.
With no room to maneuver, the 2013 Harley Davidson hit the black truck, and both rider and passenger slid into oncoming traffic. A 2007 Yamaha traveling eastbound crashed to avoid hitting the first motorcycle.
All three motorcyclists were taken to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs to be treated for serious injuries. They were all wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
In a similar case, a motorcyclist from Colorado Springs was traveling down westbound Research on June 28, when a 2008 Jeep Wrangler tried to turn left onto Chapel Hills Drive. The 48-year-old rider was wearing a helmet, but he was still pronounced dead at the scene.
I Was Hit by a Distracted Driver! What Are My Legal Options?
Distracted drivers can be just as dangerous as intoxicated ones. The fact that the collision was an accident does not negate the driver’s negligence, or comfort families who have lost loved ones. All drivers have a responsibility to be aware of the road around them and make safe decisions.
