Nebraska has already experienced an unfortunate amount of motorcycle related traffic deaths in 2011, more than in either of the two preceding years. Eighteen people have died in 2011 thus far, up from 14 in 2010 and 15 in 2009. Thirteen of the 18 deaths occurred over the summer.
While the head of the State Office of Highway Safety says that no trend is apparent in the Nebraska crashes, one statistic gives us some insight into Nebraskan motorcycle fatalities. Authorities determined that eight of the crashes were due to negligent or careless motorcycle operation, with the remainder being the fault of other drivers.
The fact that the motorcyclists were responsible for less than half the accidents is encouraging in that it shows riders acting as they should on the road. That over half the accidents were the fault of automobile drivers is disturbing.
When driving an automobile, you must remain diligently aware of motorcyclists. That the authorities found the majority of 2011’s fatal accidents to be the fault of those in the automobile shows this. You do not want to be responsible for a fatal motorcycle accident because you were not paying attention.
