According to a recent report by the Canberra Times, a 22-year-old motorcyclist died Christmas night while riding north on Northbourne Avenue around 11:00 p.m. The young man was riding his green Kawasaki 300cc motorcycle when he struggled with a left turn onto Mouat Street. The motorcyclist accidentally collided with the median mid-turn and lost control of the motorcycle.
Witnesses immediately called for help and emergency crews arrived on the scene to take the young man to Canberra Hospital. Sadly, the young motorcyclist died of his injuries in the hospital that night. A policeman said that “[p]art of the investigation will determine what the actual cause of the accident was” and “the road surface and weather conditions will be looked at.”
Unfortunately, Christmas is often a tragic time of year due to poor weather conditions and drivers in a hurry to get home to their families. There were three other traffic accidents in Canberra on Christmas Day. This incident goes to show that even minor accidents such as bumping into a median curb, which would be negligible to a motorist, can carry devastating consequences such as lacerations, road rash, loss of limbs, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and death.
