$50,000 Settlement in Pitkin County Motorcycle Wreck Lawsuit

Pitkin County and a Denver woman injured in a 2012 motorcycle accident caused by an animal control officer have reached a $50,000 settlement. According to the Aspen Daily News, on June 6, 2012, Wanda Saindon was riding a Harley Davidson driven by her husband in Clear Creek County, Colorado, when they were involved in a collision with a sheriff’s office vehicle driven by an animal control officer.

“A risk analysis, conducted by the county’s human resources department in conjunction with its insurer, took into account Saindon’s injuries and the damage to the Harley Davidson motorcycle in determining the settlement offer,” said Pitkin County Attorney John Ely.

The Pitkin County animal control officer was in Clear Creek County to help with an animal cruelty case and was on her way back to Pitkin County when the accident happened, according to the lawsuit. Prior to the wreck, Saindon and her husband were riding on Colorado Highway 103 near Idaho Springs.

The collision happened around 4 p.m. when the animal control officer turned the sheriff’s office vehicle onto the westbound Interstate 70 on-ramp. As the officer turned the vehicle, she drove in front of the Saindons’ motorcycle, causing it to T-bone her vehicle.

“I was barely moving, and I just didn’t see them,” the animal control officer said of the accident, for which she was cited for an illegal left turn.
