Are Motorcycle Helmets Really Safer?

A new study published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that helmets improve a biker’s chance of surviving a motorcycle accident by almost 30 percent.

Are Motorcycles Dangerous?

Without safety features like seatbelts and airbags, motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable during a crash. Even low-speed collisions can lead to broken bones, lacerations and crushing injuries.

Traumatic brain injuries are a tragically common result of many motorcycle accidents, as well as spinal cord injuries. Even after the initial wound heals, riders could experience permanent physical and cognitive disabilities, including paralysis.

If riders are in an accident without a helmet, their chances of sustaining a serious head injury increase by 40 percent. In a high-speed or highway accident, a head injury would most likely be fatal.

Does Colorado Have Mandatory Helmet Laws?

At least 19 states have mandatory helmet laws that make riding without protection punishable with tickets and fines. In Colorado, riders are only required to wear eye protection unless the operator or passenger is under the age of 18.

Motorcycle safety equipment like boots, jackets, and gloves can prevent serious injuries during an accident. Helmets have been proven to save lives, but every rider should have the right to make his or her own choices about safety.
