From June 24 to June 28, Avon residents can expect to see up to 400 more motorcycles on their roads than usual. For the fifth time, the city is playing host to the Motorcycle Sport Touring Association’s anniversary celebration.
The riders are expected to stay at the Christie Lodge and explore Avon’s best roads for motorcycling.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that most motorcycle accidents involving other vehicles take place between the months of June and September.
As motorists, you can help prevent motorcycle accidents this week by:
- Giving motorcycles plenty of room. Each motorcycle is entitled to a full traffic lane. In Colorado, it is illegal for motorcycles to ride between lanes (a.k.a. “lane splitting).
- Checking your blind spot. Motorcycles unintentionally hide in many vehicles’ blind spots; look twice when changing lanes.
- Driving cautiously. It can be difficult to determine how fast a motorcycle is going and how far away it is. When pulling in front of a motorcycle or making a turn in front of one, err on the side of caution.
- Keeping a safe distance. In most conditions, motorcycles can come to a complete stop faster than cars. When following motorcycles, allow some extra space.
We hope the visitors enjoy the beautiful scenery and thrilling roads the state has to offer, and that everyone keeps an extra eye out for motorcycles coming around the corner.
