CDOT Star Wars-Themed Safety Messages Urge Drivers to Stay on Target

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) celebrated the release of Star Wars: The Force Awaken by putting up Star Wars themed road signs along Interstate 25 in Denver. One sign read “The Force is strong with you, put down the phone.” Another said, “Road rage? Let the Wookie win.”, which references a famous Star Wars quote discussing the temperament of Chewbacca. The sign warns motorists can be ill-tempered, much like Han Solo’s Wookie sidekick Chewbacca.

Colorado is not the only state to implement Star Wars themed driving safety signs: Utah, Iowa and Arizona have launched similar safety campaigns.

The Facts Behind CDOT’s Star Wars-Themed Safety Messages

CDOT’s message to motorists to avoid road rage or texting and driving is sound advice. Unlike Star Wars, in real life it is impossible to use the Force and drive a vehicle with no eyes on the road. At 60 mph, it only takes five seconds of not looking at the road to cover the distance of a football field. That is plenty of time for an accident.

Star Wars-themed safety messages may have an easier time targeting the demographics involved in the majority of distracted driving accidents. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, drivers in their 20s make up 27 percent of motorists involved in fatal distracted driving accidents.

Road rage is another problem CDOT is hoping to conquer with its Star Wars-themed safety messages. Accidents caused by road rage involve speeding and reckless driving, a perfect combination for car and truck accidents.

CDOT is using one of the most successful film sagas ever created to remind motorists that some car accidents are preventable. Stay safe while travelling during the holidays, and may the Force be with you.
