The town of Aurora, Colorado is still reeling from a devastating massacre that took place inside a movie theater. During the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, sole suspect James Holmes, 24, allegedly entered through an emergency exit and unloaded four automatic weapons’ worth of ammunition into the crowd. As of this writing, 12 people died and at least 58 sustained injuries, nine of them critical. The number of fatalities makes this the largest mass shooting in United States history.
‘Rise Up Aurora’
Hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil on Sunday night to honor the injured and deceased victims of the shooting. Some held handmade signs with messages like “We Are Aurora” and “Rise Up Aurora.”
That same day, President Barack Obama visited the survivors and victims’ families to offer condolences. He gave a speech that told stories of heroism and sacrifice witnessed in the theater.
Rigged Explosives at Suspect’s Apartment
Police found stockpiles of weapons and explosives at Holmes’ apartment. A bomb squad defused a rigged explosive set to go off when someone opened his front door. Law enforcement officials later found that he had purchased at least four guns and 6,000 rounds of ammunition within the past two months.
We hope the community can soon recover from this senseless tragedy. The shooter has already caused severe injuries, killed a child and likely caused psychological damage to the survivors. Later this week we will discuss how these acts of violence affect victims’ bodies and minds.
