A driver lost control of his car, hit a pedestrian and crashed into a restaurant, according to Denver police. A woman was pushing a stroller with a 6-month-old boy inside when the car accident took place around 3 pm on Saturday, December 29.
Police say that the driver was heading east on Colfax towards Yosemite when he crashed into the woman and child. After hitting them, the car continued until it hit a Mexican restaurant and finally came to a stop.
All three people were taken to the hospital. The driver did not have serious injuries; the female pedestrian had non-serious injuries and the injured child had serious injuries. Police charged the driver with two counts of careless driving resulting in injury.
This accident shows that pedestrian accidents can happen anywhere at any time. In 2010, 4,280 pedestrians died in fatal car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Most of them (30 percent) occur between 8 pm and midnight. No word yet on whether this driver was intoxicated, but alcohol is involved in 47 percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents.
