An Arvada man is facing DUI and vehicular homicide charges after a head-on accident that killed one teen and seriously injured another.
One evening in late September, a 54-year-old man was traveling down Wadsworth Boulevard “at a high rate of speed.” Suddenly, he swerved across several lanes of traffic, putting him in the northbound lane headed in the wrong direction.
The man’s truck crashed head-on into the teens’ vehicle. The 18-year-old driver was hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries to her legs and pelvis. Tragically, her 17-year-old passenger died at the scene.
According to police reports, the driver’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. He also sustained minor injuries in the crash and was briefly hospitalized.
After his release, police arrested the driver on charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, driving under the influence and reckless driving. The family of the deceased passenger has started an online fundraising page to help pay for her memorial.
Both of these teens’ families have suffered a devastating loss, but much of their pain comes from knowing this accident was preventable. With one reckless decision, this man took an innocent life and shattered these families lives forever.
The girl who survived was fortunate, but her injuries could disable her permanently. She will regain full function if she is lucky, but she will still face a long, painful healing process.
