According to the Daily Times, on October 2, two motorcyclists were riding alongside one another heading north on Highway 550 in Colorado. Just a few miles short of Bloomfield, near the Colorado border, a 67-year-old motorcyclist from Glade Park, Colorado was hit by a 59-year-old motorcyclist from East Ridge, Tennessee.
Police and emergency crews arrived and shuttled the two off to San Juan Regional Medical Center. The 67-year-old from Glade Park, who was visiting friends in New Mexico, died at 6 a.m. the next day.
According to a sergeant with the New Mexico State Police, the surviving motorcyclist “was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving because he had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.” Furthermore, paramedics found an empty bottle of Canadian Mist whiskey and beers littered about the crash site. Court documents reveal that he “refused to allow police to take a blood sample to test it for alcohol, but he did tell an officer that he had a beer for breakfast.”
If police investigations reveal that the surviving driver was drinking and driving, vehicular manslaughter may be added to his present charge, aggravated DWI. This was the tenth fatality in San Juan County and the third on U.S. 550.
