Fort Collins Stunt Team Performs at Thunder on the Rockies

Suicidal Lifestyles Stunt Team, a group of specialty riders from Fort Collins, will perform at the annual Thunder in the Rockies motorcycle rally the weekend of August 30.

Thunder in the Rockies is the largest motorcycle rally in the state of Colorado, attracting more than 40,000 motorcycle lovers from across the country. This year, organizers are holding the rally in Loveland at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson.

The event will introduce the 2015 Harley-Davidson models, showing off the sleek new designs. In addition to the stunt team’s performance, the rally also includes events like the Rhett Rotten Wall of Death and the Extreme Midget Wrestling Federation.

Suicidal Lifestyles started as a group of friends competing between themselves for the best bike trick. The group was officially founded with six total members in 2007.

The stunt team started out performing at motorcycle dealerships on “crotch rocket” motorcycles, or street bikes. Their exhibition at Thunder on the Rockies will feature street bikes exclusively, although team members now also perform on BMX bikes and dirt bikes.

The team’s leader said performing such complicated stunts in public requires “self-confidence, guts and practice.” Members must be able to perform their tricks safely, while still entertaining the crowd and fielding requests for photos and autographs.

The group issues invitations to potential members after current members decide if the new rider has enough skills to perform in public. Even skilled riders can be distracted by shouting, other riders on the track or camera flashes, making them liable to get hurt.
