Harley-Davidson Issues Recall for Possible Clutch Defect

Harley-Davidson is recalling 125,000 of their latest motorcycles, after reports of a potential problem with the hydraulic clutch system.

The recall affects Touring, CVO Touring, CVO Softail and Trike motorcycles for the 2014 model year. The affected motorcycles were built in the U.S. from May 22, 2013 to July 18, 2014. Some models were also assembled outside of the U.S. between March 25, 2013 and Aug. 20, 2014.

According to reports, a design defect sometimes creates a tear in the hydraulic clutch system, which disengages the clutch and could cause the bike to “creep forward from a stop.” To date, the company has received reports of 19 accidents and 3 minor injuries caused by the defect.

So far, the damage appears to be minimal, but America’s favorite motorcycle manufacturer still initiated the recall voluntarily.

The company is asking the owners of the defective bikes to have them inspected at a local Harley-Davidson dealer. If the defect is present, dealership mechanics will repair it at no cost.
