Thomas Hugh Sternberg, 30, of Casper, was taken into custody after leaving the scene of a head-on collision with only three wheels on his truck.
“The front left wheel had been knocked off and the vehicle was riding on the axle and brake drum on the front left side,” according to the affidavit from the case.
The auto accident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, July 18, 2011, at the intersection of 13th Street and Wyoming Boulevard. The truck passed one of the officers responding to the crash.
Police pursued the vehicle which eventually stopped near the baseball fields off West 13th Street.
Sternberg was taken into custody at gunpoint after not obeying police orders. He admitted to police that he had consumed alcohol and also claimed to be under a doctor’s care for “explosive anger disorder.” Sternberg was taken to Wyoming Medical Center to treat the injuries he sustained in the accident. While in the hospital, Sternberg attempted to steal more than $1,000 worth of medicine.
He was arrested on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 for leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, driving under the influence and on charges of larceny stemming from the alleged hospital theft.
