Hit-and-Run Driver Pays $2.5 Million for Motorcycle Accident

A Denver jury awarded a $2.5 million settlement to the family of a hit-and-run victim who was killed in a motorcycle accident.

In 2011, a 25-year-old motorcyclist was riding near Federal Boulevard and Virginia Avenue when a white Jeep Cherokee pulled out of a car wash directly into the bike’s path. The rider tried to slow down, but there was not enough room, and he slammed into the SUV.

A disturbing video of the crash shows the driver continuing north on Federal for half a block before he abandoned his car and fled. He also abandoned two passengers, one of whom sustained a serious head injury.

Police arrested the 26-year-old driver several days later, although they did not discuss what charges he was facing.

The motorcyclist’s family filed a suit against the reckless driver, alleging wrongful death and negligence. On October 1 of this year, a jury found the driver liable for the man’s death and awarded the family $2.5 million.

Motorcycles are fun and fast and exciting, but they offer very few safety options. If riders are hit by a careless driver, they often suffer serious injuries or death.
