Hockey Player With Broken Neck Makes Amazing Recovery

University of Denver center Jesse Martin is making an amazing recovery from a spinal injury that should have paralyzed or even killed him last year.

Martin had his neck broken on the ice in Grand Forks, N.D. Unable to move his limbs while lying on the ice, he told himself “You’re going to be a quadriplegic.”

In an interview with the Denver Post, Jesse said, “You run through everything real quickly in your head. Your relationships are done. Somebody’s going to have to take care of you for the rest of your life.”

Instead of being paralyzed, though, Jesse is now scheduled to start a job, and soon will begin playing hockey in a non-contact recreational league. He is not playing professional hockey as he dreamed of doing, but he is walking and able to have what most would consider a normal life. This, he says, makes him “the luckiest man in the world.”

Such a recovery from a traumatic spinal injury is rare, and while lucky, it is a testament to Martin’s willpower that he has made so much progress.
