How to Avoid Truck Accidents

Truck accidents can happen at any time. Sometimes you have no time to act (or split seconds, like in the video above), but there are a few precautions you can take to avoid truck accidents.

  • Stay out of blind spots. These are usually marked on the rear of the truck. In particular, stay away from the right blind spot. If the truck turns right, the trailer could hit your car.
  • Never pass on the right. It is illegal, and the truck driver might not see you until it is too late.
  • Give them room. The general rule of thumb is to keep six seconds between your vehicle and the truck, a little more in rainy weather. If you are stopped behind a truck in a traffic or at a light, keep your distance from the bumper. Trucks sometimes roll back a few feet when they begin accelerating.
  • Know your state’s laws. State laws vary on who has the right of way near highway entrance ramps. In Colorado, drivers entering the highway must yield right-of-way to cars already on the highway. If a truck is blocking your entrance to the highway, wait for it to pass or merge aside.

In 2010, 3,675 people died in large truck accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If you lost a loved one in a truck accident, give us a call or submit a contact form. We can talk about your situation at no cost to you.
