If you ride a BMW motorcycle, you should check the recent recall released by the United Sates Department of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Those who ride a C600 Sport, C650GT, F700GS, F800GS, F800GS Adventure, F800GT, R1200R or a R1200GS may be at risk for serious mid-ride engine trouble. The recall only applies to motorcycles produced in 2013 with side stand switches. Essentially, in affected vehicles, water is leaking in through an opening in the side stand and preventing the engine from shutting off if it is already running and turning on if it is not.
Investigators noticed the issue last summer while testing the engine of the C600 Sport and acknowledged that the engine had a tendency to shut off. After trouble shooting numerous options, BMW engineers realized that the engine trouble only occurred after recent washing and discovered the water leak. The leaking side stand switches were implicated in a previous recall with the F800GS and F700GS bikes in July of 2013. According to the NHTSA, the affected bikes are dangerous because they are at risk for “potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.”
