According to Motorcycle Daily, Kurt Caselli, an internationally recognized, up-and-coming off-road racing star, died with only 90 miles left of the Baja 1000, an 883-mile race through the desert at 4:30 p.m. on November 15. Caselli made headlines earlier this year for winning two stages of the Dakar Rally. If it were not for his tragic accident, he likely would have won the Baja 1000. At the time of the accident, Caselli’s team, KTM, was in first place.
Looking for clues as the cause of the accident, the KTM team recovered the motorcycle from the dunes. Further analysis of the motorcycle revealed traces of dead animal tissue which corroborated with an eyewitness who reportedly saw Caselli collide with a small desert creature. Apparently, after colliding with the animal Caselli suffered fatal head trauma and died of his wounds in the desert of Ensenada, Mexico.
The head of KTM said, “Today we lost a hero in the worst possible circumstances. We are shocked and saddened by this tragic news and our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Kurt’s family.”
