Mother and Child Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident

A pregnant mother from Greeley and her 9-year-old daughter were killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer late last month. A 24-year-old male passenger riding with them was airlifted to the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with serious injuries.

The group was riding in a pickup truck on Weld County Road 31. As they traveled north and crossed the intersection of Colorado Highway 14, a semi-trailer hauling logs struck the driver’s side of the pickup, killing the young mother and her daughter at the scene.

One male passenger survived the crash and is currently listed in “fair condition.” The truck driver was uninjured and refused treatment at the scene.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reports that this stretch of road has a history of serious and deadly crashes. The intersection of Weld County Road 31 and Colorado Highway 14 has seen nine crashes since 2007, with five fatalities. Additionally, the 1-mile stretch of highway before the intersection has had eight fatal crashes in the last five years.

Traffic at the controversial intersection is regulated by two stop signs. CDOT has already announced plans to install a flashing stop sign and evaluate the surrounding area to see if more changes are needed.

“We can’t put a street light on every county road,” one spokesperson said. “[Drivers] have to take some accountability in our driving ability and watch for traffic and make appropriate decisions.”

Who Is Liable for My Accident?

Local municipalities like CDOT are responsible for maintaining safe roadways and intersections. If a road’s design is causing cars to crash, these agencies have a responsibility to address the issue to prevent further accidents.

Determining liability in a crash can be the most important aspect of any civil or personal injury lawsuit.
