Distracted driving is a major cause of crashes in Colorado

Will Car Dealerships Help Improve Colorado Motorcycle Safety?

Colorado is in a crisis. Over the past four years, motorcyclist fatalities have risen 58 percent, and things don’t appear to be slowing down. Fortunately, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a plan to deal with this. But will the agency’s new plan, which involves a car dealership, succeed in spreading motorcycle safety?

Colorado Motorcycle Safety and Car Dealerships

Last year, Colorado set an all-time record for motorcyclist deaths in our state. An unprecedented 125 riders perished in 2016, and 2017 isn’t shaping up any better. So far, 72 people have died in motorcycle crashes this year, but officials are looking to change that.

You see, most fatal motorcycle crashes involve collisions with other vehicles. In fact, the Colorado State Patrol has gone on record blaming the spike in motorcyclist fatalities on distracted driving. That’s why CDOT is turning its attention to educating drivers, and they’ve got help from an unlikely source.

Groove Auto has allowed CDOT to wrap some of its courtesy vehicles with reminder for drivers to always check their blind spots. On the dealership’s show room floor, every vehicle mirror has a special sticker reminding drivers to look out for motorcyclists. This is only the tip of the iceberg for this latest safety campaign.

CDOT has also launched a fleet of truck side billboards, online advertisements, and radio spots to further remind drivers to watch out for motorcycles. The campaign went into effect Tuesday the 12th, and is expected to last till the end of September. By that time, motorcycle season should be wrapping up, however, there are a few brave riders who continue to ride when the weather turns cold. That means motorcycle safety is a year-round consideration.
