An already existing medical imaging technology is being used to help predict long-term damage in patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. A study revealed that there is potential for patients to suffer from long-term brain damage from a mild form of traumatic brain injury. The scan uses the brain’s naturally occurring magnetic fields to establish which parts of it have connectivity issues.
Dr. Pratik Mukherjee, the senior author of the study, said that once they have the connectivity information, they could then create a template of what the brain would look like in a normal subject, giving them a much richer view of what and where the problem areas are in each patient. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year roughly 1.7 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury. The majority of the victims are athletes, members of the military and people involved in car accidents. Dr. Mukherjee is hopeful that these new scans will help to diagnose people that will suffer from a long term traumatic brain injuries and help them receive the treatment they need.
As mentioned above, a large majority of brain injuries are due to car accidents. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident due to the negligence of another driver, please contact our national accident attorney today. Call (866) 377-3800 for a free consultation.
