New Technology Allows Motorists To “See Through” Commercial Trucks

Samsung is developing a new type of semi-truck that could significantly improve the safety of other motorists. A Russian design firm created the technology, naming it the Transparentius concept, before Samsung started development.

The new concept could give motorists driving behind trucks a clear-eyed view of what is going on in front of slow moving semis. Samsung has nicknamed its iteration of the Transparentius, “The Safety Truck”.

Cameras are attached to the front of the trucks and four large display screens are utilized on the back, allowing motorists to see what truck drivers are seeing. The new concept would give drivers more visual information so they could know when it is safe to overtake trucks and when truck drivers are about to run into road obstacles.

Truck accidents can occur for many different reasons, but in some cases, drivers may not be able to see around large semis, causing fatal accidents when attempting to overtake them. Another risk for motorists is when trucks suddenly brake, leaving no time to stop. With the new technology, sudden construction, traffic jams or other obstacles in the road would become visible to motorists driving behind trucks.

Unfortunately, The Safety Truck is still in the testing phase and some companies may find it too expensive to upgrade.

Could New Technology Help Motorists Avoid Truck Accidents?

Statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that 3,964 motorists died in truck accidents in 2013, the fourth year in a row the number of accidents has increased. Distractions, fatigue, brake problems and traffic flow interruption were listed as common reasons for truck accidents by the NHTSA.
