Off-Duty Officer Was in Another Accident Minutes Before Fatal Crash

When Michael Martel, 42, the off-duty Michigan police officer, went off the road in Clay Township, about 35 miles northeast of Detroit, it was not the only accident he’d had that day.

About 20 minutes before the crash where Martel was critically injured, he fell off his motorcycle in Marine City.

At about 12:10 a.m. two Marine City officers on bike patrol noticed Martel speeding south on North Water Street before running a stop sign and turning west on Broadway Street. Shortly after they observed Martel, a security guard flagged the officers down stating that a motorcycle rider fell off his bike while attempting to turn around at a nearby festival tent at North Water and Pearl Streets.

Another witness at the scene helped Martel right his motorcycle and Martel continued south on North Martel Street.

According to witness reports, Martel appeared “staggerish” and left a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol behind.

At about 12:30 a.m. Martel veered off Pointe Tremble Road, in Clay Township, hit a sign and stopped at a pole. The officers from the Marine City incident were on site at the Clay Township crash and identified the bike as the same vehicle at the previous incident.

Martel died Friday, July 15, 2011 as a result of his injuries.
