Recent motorcycle fatalities in Western New York highlight common contributing factors to accidents. Thirteen riders, ages 18 to 70, have died in the past three months. Two of the thirteen were the result of negligent drivers changing lanes blindly or initiating illegal U-turns.
According to a representative of the State Police Motorcycle Unit, “When motor vehicles are a factor, many times motorists are not paying attention… Motorists are turning left in front of them, or they’re turning right on red and not fully stopping, which is causing the motorcyclist to perform evasive action.”
In one case, an off-duty police officer from Evans was riding his Yamaha on Lake Shore Road on his way to the dentist for a root canal following an overnight shift. A car cut in front of him, hit him on the driver’s side, and forced him to make an evasive maneuver into oncoming traffic where he collided with a car and died immediately. The driver who changed lanes in front of him was unaware of even hitting him in the first place.
I Know Someone Injured By a Negligent Driver. Who Do I Call?
High speed and alcohol did not contribute to the accident. Instead, “It’s the 2,000 pound metal machines that surround him” stated the captain of the Hamburg Police Department.
Given that motorcycles lack the protection of a car, fatal accidents can occur to veteran and inexperienced motorcyclists because motorist inattention is often the cause. If you or someone you know has been seriously injured as a result of the negligence of other drivers, you deserve full compensation and the comfort of knowing that those responsible have been brought to justice. Many of our attorneys are also avid motorcyclists. As such, we have a long history of successfully defending the rights of motorcyclists.
