Officer Killed in Colorado Springs Motorcycle Crash Honored

On November 4, a motorcycle officer killed during a high-speed pursuit was amongst a group of officers honored by the Colorado Springs Police Department. According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, the officer, Matthew Tyner, was honored as a part of the 28th Annual Medal of Valor Luncheon, which was presented by the Police Foundation of Colorado Springs and held in the Broadmoor Hotel’s Broadmoor Hall.

“This is a great opportunity for the police department and the community to recognize officers for well above and beyond courageous acts,” Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey told the Gazette.

The fatal motorcycle accident that claimed Matthew Tyner’s life happened July 24, 2012. According to Fox 21 News in Colorado Springs, Tyner was involved in a high-speed police chase when the accident occurred. As the officer’s pursuit reached the intersection of Austin Bluffs Parkway and Silver Drive, an SUV swerved in front of him. Tyner crashed into the SUV. Following the wreck, he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

At the conclusion of the luncheon, the Police Cross was awarded to Matthew Tyner. Since Tyner’s family had already been given the award in April, they did not attend the luncheon.

“A police training facility where Tyner taught hundreds of officers safety training was named Tyner Hall in his honor,” police spokesperson Barbara Miller said.
