Gillette, Wyoming was established on January 6, 1892. The town gets its name from Edward Gillette, a surveyor for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Gillette is located in the Powder River Basin between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills. From 2000 to 2010, Gillette saw its population increase 48.06 percent from 19,646 to 29,087.
Gillette has experienced such population booms before. In fact, its rapid population growth was the subject of a study done by psychologist El Dean Kohrs in 1974, the results of which became known as the “Gillette Syndrome.” Kohrs’ study chronicled the social ramifications of the rapid population growth that occurred in Gillette due to coal mining development, including a crime increase, cases of degraded mental health, increased cost of living and weakened social and community bonds.
Despite some of the growing pains it has had to endure, Gillette has become a source of pride for Wyoming. With the increased emergence of clean burning, low sulfur coal as a viable energy source going forward, Gillette’s energy industry is taking on more prominence. Known as the “Energy Capital of the World,” Gillette is home to thriving coal, oil and coal bed methane gas industries, which is a major reason why Wyoming provides nearly 35 percent of the nation’s coal.
As Gillette’s energy industry grows, so will its population, as people flock to the area for work. For the most part, that is a good thing, but even with all of the wide-open spaces Gillette provides, the increased traffic will not do motorcyclists any favors. With more cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles having to share the road, odds are there will be more car, truck and motorcycle accidents, too.
