Pedestrian Accidents On The Rise In Las Vegas

Pedestrian accidents are on the rise in Las Vegas, Nevada this year. In 2011, there were only 72 traffic-related fatalities in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction. As 2013 comes to an end, recent studies have identified a total of 106 traffic-related fatalities. Most recently, a 53-year-old woman was struck by an automobile and died near the intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Desert Inn Road.

A representative of the University of Nevada’s Las Vegas’ Safe Community Partnership who studies traffic accidents said that:

“We have this phenomenon, and it’s happening more and more in our community where pedestrians walking down the street say, I suddenly want to go here, and they go without the thought of vehicles and vehicle speed…I’m sure Metro is widely frustrated.”

She believes that adding more marked crosswalks and promoting pedestrian accountability could lower the number of pedestrian fatalities.

These sentiments are echoed by a Metro PD representative who said, “[t]he trend that we see in the last couple weeks…I don’t want to even imagine what the number is going to be at midnight on December 21. I think they are going to say it’s not going to happen to me.”
