Pikes Peak Motorcycle Ride Honors Fallen Police Officers

On Sunday June 8, Colorado motorcyclists took time to honor police and corrections officers who were killed in the line of duty.

The Pikes Peak Fallen Officer Memorial Ride has been an annual event since 2006. Sunday’s event started at Cowboy’s in downtown Colorado Springs and rode through Falcon, Castle Rock and Palmer Lake.

The ride started as a way for Pikes Peak motorcycle enthusiasts to honor Colorado Springs Police Detective Jared Jensen. Jensen was shot and killed trying to arrest a parolee in 2006.

In recent years, the ride has expanded into a memorial for all officers who have given their lives to defend public safety. This year’s ride honored former Department of Corrections Prisons’ Chief Tom Clements.

Clements was murdered in his Monument home by an unknown assailant in March 2013. Investigators have speculated that a parolee with a grudge against Clements was responsible, but they have no solid evidence and the crime remains unsolved.

Appointed in 2011, Clements was liked and respected by his coworkers and inmates alike. Daniel Underhill, a friend and supporter who also worked in the Department of Corrections, said Clements’s death was a blow felt across all levels of law enforcement.

“Everyone in the facility was totally somber, you could tell there was total shock not just by the Department of Corrections but by inmates [as well],” Underhill said.

In total, 26 fallen officers were honored during the event. By 2016, officers hope to construct a Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers’ Memorial at Memorial Park.
