Rider Dies in Fiery Crash

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Clark, NJ man in the early hours of Sunday, July 10, 2011.

Joseph Urban, 26, was driving his motorcycle down St. Georges Avenue in Avenel, NJ at about 3:00 a.m. along with friends, who were traveling by car. Around Avenel Street, Urban passed his companions who temporarily lost sight of him. As his friends approached the bend in the road near Peach Tree Plaza in Avenel they saw a ball of flame, which they discovered was Urban’s motorcycle.

According to the police report, Urban struck the curb at the intersection where St. Georges Avenue bends toward Rahway. He had hit a yellow gas line indicator and a telephone pole and was he was ejected from the vehicle.

Urban’s body landed at the entrance to the K-Mart. Urban’s helmet was discovered about 50 feet away from his body. The flaming motorcycle traveled across St. Georges Avenue and stopped in front of the Home Depot. The Avenel Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

One of Urban’s companions, Joseph Salerno, was performing CPR when the police arrived. Urban he was pronounced dead at 3:20 a.m. as a result of major head trauma. Police also found human remains on the telephone pole.

The accident is still under investigation.
