How To Get Hit By Cars, According to CDOT

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has rolled out a new campaign aimed at protecting pedestrians from accidents. A new video series released by CDOT, called “Hank’s How to Get Hit by a Car” takes a comical look at pedestrian safety. With the look of a used car salesman from the 1970s, Hank uses dark humor to reach out to young adults with a message of how to stay safe as pedestrians. In one of the videos, a drunk man is shown walking across the street where he is promptly hit by a car.

Many of the videos will use dark humor to dissuade jaywalking, an activity that causes thousands of pedestrian accidents across the country every year. The videos and campaign will continue through August, September and October when young pedestrians are most likely to be struck by vehicles.

How Common are Pedestrian Accidents in Colorado?

Last year in Colorado, there were 1,453 pedestrian accidents, including 65 of which were fatal. Nationally, the number of pedestrian accidents is much higher. Across the country, 5,000 pedestrians are killed and another 70,000 are injured annually.

CDOT recommends pedestrians always look before crossing the street, including behind the shoulders to spot vehicles making turns. Pedestrians should also look for traffic while crossing the street. CDOT also runs a bicycle and pedestrian program, which offers resources for cyclists and pedestrians on how to avoid accidents.
