As the weather warms up, more and more bikers venture out on the roads to take advantage of the sunshine. Unfortunately, due to drivers getting used to seeing more bikes on the road, and bikers brushing up on their skills after lying dormant all winter, the roads can be very dangerous this time of year.
The week of April 24th there were three serious accidents involving motorcycles, some with fatal consequences. When the weather warms up, bikers are more likely to go without helmets and protective clothing to stay cool. John Beldock, owner of Erico Motorsports, warns against this, because having the right gear is essential in the event of a crash. Padded gloves, jackets and sturdy boots, can all make a big difference in how a rider fares after a collision.
While riding, your most important weapon against other reckless drivers is your mind.
“You have to ride as though you’re invisible,” Beldock says. “You have to realize that you’re very small, and some drivers can be distracted or unaware. A small correction on your part [could make a huge difference].”
