Study Shows Fatigue Causes 20 Percent of Car Accidents

A recent study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute shows that 20 percent of car accidents are due to fatigue. This number is far greater than the previously believed 2 or 3 percent, estimated from past surveys and simulated studies. Another statistic revealed from the study indicated that young people, between the ages 18 – 20, are more likely to be involved in these types of car accidents. The study suggests that a young person’s sleep pattern tends to occur later in the day. This suggests why more accidents, due to fatigue, are commonly reported during the day.

This is quite an alarming study, as it suggests that accidents caused by something that can easily be prevented put so many young lives at stake. Often, when a driver falls asleep behind the wheel, it can lead to devastating fatal car accidents, as the person falling asleep cannot react in a timely manner. Having that cup of coffee before you go out may be a good idea after all.
