A Leadville, Colorado child will possibly go blind after sustaining brain injuries at the hands of a woman he was placed with by social services.
The child’s mother had used alcohol and drugs while pregnant, leaving the boy developmentally disabled. Due to poor home conditions, social services took him from his mother and placed him with his uncle, Donald Nacke, and his wife Shawna.
Now Shawna is being charged with felony child abuse. She called 911 when she thought the boy was having a seizure, she told police. Upon examination, authorities discovered the boy had been shaken badly enough that he suffered “significant” brain swelling and had to have surgery to relieve the pressure. Now doctor’s say he could potentially go blind from his injuries.
Shawna Nacke claimed that his brother, also a toddler, caused the child’s injuries and that they occurred the night before. According to authorities, though, if the injuries had occurred the night before, the boy would have died, and the extent of the injuries made her statements unbelievable.
The amount of pain and suffering this boy has experienced is tragic, and with such significant brain injuries, his life will be permanently marked by this abuse.
