Two SUVs, Two Wrong-Way Collisions, Two Fatalities

Both accidents occurred within five hours of each other.

A woman driving an SUV collided with a semi tractor-trailer while travelling in the wrong direction, in the early-morning hours on Monday, July 4th, 2011.

The automobile accident occurred at about 3:40 a.m. in the downtown loop of Interstate 70, east of Broadway. A Kansas City patrol officer spotted the woman driving westbound in the eastbound lanes on the north side of the loop, just before she slammed into the semi tractor-trailer.

The patrol officers tried to get the driver to stop, and warn oncoming traffic, but the collision occurred within moments of the officers spotting the vehicle.

The driver of the semi tractor-trailer was not badly injured in the crash and was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. The SUV driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Neither driver has been identified at this time.

Kansas City police are investigating the accident. Sgt. Bill Mahoney stated that blood will be taken to determine if alcohol was a factor in the collision.

A second collision occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Interstate 435 when an SUV travelling south in the northbound lane hit a passenger car. The accident killed the car’s driver, Diane Bronson, 44, of Belton and her 11-year-old daughter, Anna Bronson.
