What Is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

As attorney Phil Chupick explains in this video, uninsured motorist coverage (UM) can be invaluable if you are hit by an uninsured driver. If the other driver has no insurance, then you can claim compensation from your own provider through a UM claim. Since many motorists drive without active insurance, despite state laws, a UM policy can save you money and frustration in the event of a wreck.

Uninsured motorist coverage, on your policy, protects you when you’re in an accident or a crash, and it’s someone else’s fault and that person does not have insurance. Lots of states require people to have insurance, in fact all of them do. But, some people don’t. And if you get in a crash with someone whose fault it is, and they don’t have insurance, then you can be left holding the bag, if you don’t have uninsured motorist coverage. When you have that—and it’s fairly affordable—it covers you. The damages to your car and your injuries. For the person who doesn’t have insurance. And we highly recommend that you get that, because lots of times in lots of states, people are driving around without insurance. And uninsured motorist coverage will help you recover from a crash like that.
