Peter “Rocky” Rognlie, a Utah attorney, died in a motorcycle crash on August 30 when he collided with a car. The car made an abrupt left turn in front of 54-year-old Rognlie in downtown Salt Lake City, and investigators closed the intersection at the site of the accident for several hours. According to DeseretNews.com, Rognlie joined Utah’s State Attorney General’s Office in 1999. He was the chief of the civil rights section, enforced family support obligations and worked to prosecute predators for Utah’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Though the driver could have been more deliberate about signaling and slowing down before a turn, we must also remember to be aware at all times of cars that make brake suddenly or pavement that may still be wet with dew from the night before.
Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff stated that he “handled some of the toughest criminal and civil cases” in the state. A lawyer who fought for such important regulations and safeguards for children will be sorely missed.
