A crash on a Nebraska interstate this month left three people dead and five hurt after a van they were riding in rolled.
The crash happened on Interstate 80 in central Nebraska, when the tread on a rear tire of the van separated, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. The tread separation caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, with the van heading into the median and rolling multiple times.
Eight passengers were in the van, including a baby. Six of them, all women, were thrown from the vehicle. Claudia J. Cerda-Hernandez, 25, of Albuquerque, N.M. and Romelia Pacheco, 32, of Denver were pronounced dead at the scene. According to authorities, a third woman, Viridiana Becomo, 23, of Denver, died later at the hospital.
Patrol spokesperson Deb Collins said that the infant was buckled into a child seat, and the driver and front seat passenger were wearing seatbelts.
The other crash victims were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The most surprising thing about this accident is that more people were not hurt. Were you in an auto accident that you should not have survived?
