KWWL in Waterloo, Iowa is reporting that an accident between a motorcycle and a pick-up truck has left one person dead, one injured and one in custody. The accident occurred on June 22 just after 9:30 p.m. A 22-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet S-10 on Dubuque Road in Black Hawk County when he crossed the center line and crashed into a Honda CBR900 motorcycle headed in the opposite direction.
The wreck sent the motorcycle and its two riders, a 20-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, into a roadside ditch. Despite a flat tire and a damaged front-end, the driver of the pick-up truck sped away from the scene. A witness followed him and kept emergency dispatchers updated on his whereabouts. Evansville police were able to catchup to him about eight miles away from the scene of the accident near Douglas Drive.
When deputies apprehended the pick-up truck driver, it was reported that he smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. They had him take all of the field sobriety tests, which he reportedly failed, and according to court records, tests later revealed that he had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit at the time of the accident. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter for the woman’s death as well as serious injury by vehicle for the man’s wounds.
The two motorcyclists were airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City. The woman suffered a traumatic brain injury, which proved fatal, and the man sustained a severe leg injury that may require amputation.
