What Is A Motorcycle Safety Class That Is Not Held In A Parking Lot?

Most motorcycle safety courses are held in parking lots of empty supermalls. This keeps motorcyclists insulated from the road and thereby safer; however, parking lots cannot provide a real world context in which to learn. The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) has taken their advanced motorcycle safety courses out of the parking lot and onto the road. The purpose of the program is to develop safe riding habits in a real life context.

“This is a wonderful idea,” said the NAVFAC EXWC commanding officer. “We constantly reinforce motorcycle safety during quarters and focus on the need to keep safety at the forefront of everything we do. This motorcycle tour puts those safety tenets into action and allows us to operationalize motorcycle safety.”

The ride goes through a mix of different terrains, including canyons, winding curves and standard highways. “This is a kind of mentorship program,” said the ride organizer, “where we can learn safe riding techniques from one another while we’re out on the open road.”
