According to a recent study from the American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE), recent legislative focus on helmet use as the sole contributor to motorcycle safety is misguided and obscures the influence of other safety concerns. An analysis of Michigan’s surge of motorcycle fatalities in 2011 shows that more motorcyclists died wearing helmets than not. Furthermore, helmet-wearing motorcyclists were 60 percent more likely to suffer an incapacitating injury.
The real culprit behind the increase in motorcycle fatalities is unlicensed motorcyclists. In fact, 58 percent of motorcycle fatalities in 2012 involved unlicensed motorcyclists, the majority of which were wearing helmets. ABATE is trying to push the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to focus more on motorcycle education and less on helmet requirements. Furthermore, motorcycle education applies to motorists just as much as it does to motorcyclists.
Motorists often recklessly collide with motorcycles because they were never educated on motorcycle awareness. By focusing our legislative efforts on motorcycle education for motorists and motorcyclists, then we can hope to reduce motorcycle fatalities in the long term. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycle accident caused by a reckless motorist, our national motorcycle accident attorneys can help you recover the compensation that you deserve.
