According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the winners of the Head Health Challenge (HHC) were announced recently. The Head Health Challenge is a competition co-sponsored by General Electric (GE) and the National Football League (NFL) to improve the treatment and diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries for soldiers, athletes and anyone else suffering from traumatic brain injuries. The winners each received $300,000 to fund their research. Furthermore, this year’s winners will be eligible for a subsequent $500,000 come 2015.
The CEO of GE’s Ventures & Healthymagination said, “By advancing the work of these winners, we will better understand brain injuries suffered by athletes and members of the military and improve our knowledge of the brain overall which could help improve our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.”
The new technologies being developed by the winners include blood tests to measure the severity of traumatic brain injuries and on the field electroencephalography tests to measure brain activity, both of which focus on measuring brain injuries immediately after the incident. Far too often, brain injuries pass by unnoticed because, in most cases, they lack exterior symptoms.
