Wife of Aurora Fire Chief Faces Felony Hit-and-Run Charges

Authorities are reporting that a hit-and-run driver who injured two children is the wife of Aurora’s fire chief.

According to reports, Adriene Garcia rear-ended a sedan that was stopped at a red light at the corner of Easy Yale Avenue and Peoria Street. When Garcia pulled up behind the car, she stopped “as though it were a four-way stop.” When she started to drive, she rear-ended the Hyundai so hard that her airbag deployed.

The driver of the Hyundai, 37-year-old Raymond Hernandez, was injured, along with his two children who were not wearing seatbelts. Hernandez’s 9-year-old son was hospitalized and treated for a broken jaw. All three are expected to recover.

Hernandez later received citations for driving while his license was revoked, and a seatbelt violation for failing to secure his children.

After she fled, police found Garcia’s Nissan Pathfinder about 4.5 miles from the crash site on the side of the road. It had stopped running. A man who had pulled over to help Garcia said she seemed “out of it and pretty distressed.”

The police drove Garcia back to the scene of the crash, and she called her husband. He arrived at the scene and told officers that his wife had suffered a brain injury in the past, which may have contributed to her erratic behavior. She was given a ticket and allowed to go home.

Since that night, police have issued an arrest warrant for Garcia on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and careless driving with injury, a felony and a traffic infraction respectively. Garcia surrendered to police on May 30.
