Visibility has always been a serious issue for motorcyclists, and lack of visibility causes a fair share of accidents and fatalities. Recently, there have been some new ideas and innovations put forward that are going to attempt to fix the problem.
One man’s motorcycle accident turned into a $100,000 idea when he started a company, GearBrake, which secured funding to develop a new type of brake light. The innovative light flashes near the rear of the motorcycle to warn nearby drivers of the motorcyclist’s presence. GearBrake is also working on a wireless lighting system that can be worn on clothing to help increase the visibility of motorcycles even further. To boost sales and make its lighting system a new norm, GearBrake is attempting to seek an endorsement from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
Presently, riders can opt to wear high-visibility clothing and stick to areas with good lighting. If companies like GearBrake succeed in setting the new norm, motorcyclists will have more options available to them in the near future.
How Many Motorcycle Accidents Are Caused by Poor Visibility?
Sixty percent of motorcycle accidents happen at night or in poor lighting conditions. By increasing the visibility of motorcyclists during these hours, it would be highly beneficial to the safety of riders. In addition to poor lighting causing accidents, 70 percent of drivers claimed to have not seen a motorcyclist until it was too late to avert an accident.
Over 4,900 motorcyclists were killed in 2012, and many more were injured because other motorists did not see them. To reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused by low visibility, new ways to make motorcycles visible should continue to be developed.
