Wyoming Car Accident Claims Life of an Elderly Man

A late September three-car accident involving eight people on Interstate 90 in Wyoming left a 75-year-old man dead, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. The 75-year-old was driving three others, ranging in age from 71 to 74. Prior to the accident, he had stopped the car in the westbound lane of I-90 because of a traffic jam.

All of the traffic heading west on I-90, 30 miles east of Buffalo, had been diverted into an eastbound lane due to construction. A traffic jam was created when an extremely oversized load traveling east was being moved through the construction zone, which forced westbound traffic to stop. Another car pulled into the left lane next to the 75-year-old’s car. That car was being driven by an 84-year-old and contained two passengers, a 93-year-old and a 70-year-old.

As a 47-year-old Gillette resident approached the traffic jam at around 11:30a.m., she had her cruise control set to 80 mph but turned it off when she saw the oversized load. It was, however, not in time to prevent her from rear-ending the 75-year-old’s vehicle. Due to the force of the collision, the 75-year-old’s vehicle was forced into the left lane where it struck the 84-year-old’s vehicle.

After the accident, the 75-year-old was taken to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper by helicopter. It was there that he was pronounced dead. The other passengers in his car were taken to Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Buffalo where they were treated. No one else involved in the accident had to be taken to the hospital. The 47-year-old was cited for careless driving, according to a Wyoming Highway Patrol press release.
